Permit Technician

Perform technical tasks and customer service as the primary contact in Development Services for all public inquiries related to the development review processes. Apply technical knowledge to respond to development related questions or ensure that the questions are forwarded to the appropriate staff.  Process applications, review plans, conduct research and compile building, engineering, land use, and development information, calculate development review fees, collect fees, issue permits, and coordinate customer requests involving permitting and code enforcement.  This position is the journey level classification in the permit technician series.   Incumbents are expected to perform basic and skilled work with minimal supervision or oversight.  These tasks are illustrative only and may include other related duties.

 

Full-Time 40 hours per week

Essential Duties

 

Coordinates the development review process.

  • Accepts electronic plans and documents; conducts preliminary plan review; electronically assembles essential development information; routes plans to appropriate personnel. 
  • Obtains and interprets information from various databases, recordkeeping systems, and Geographic Information System. 
  • Finalizes permits for issuance; calculates and collects fees; issues permits.
  • Coordinates with other divisions and the Finance Department on payment processing, refunds, and reconciling accounts. 
  • Coordinates code enforcement requests.
  • Supports the Business Analyst position(s) with functions pertaining to the department’s business processes and electronic permit tracking software applications.
  • Updates and maintains aspects of the electronic permit and plan review system and participates in identifying and developing system and reporting upgrades as appropriate to ensure operating efficiency is maximized.

Qualifications and Skills

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma, or equivalent.

Two years of position-related work experience.
